Soybean oil

Soybean oil

सोयाबीन तेल

Oils & Ghee

A neutral refined oil, sold everywhere in India and bought on price rather than on taste.

What to know

Nothing distinguishes it in the pan from sunflower or rice bran oil, and this page will not pretend otherwise. Use whichever of the three is in the cupboard; no recipe here is written around it. It matters on a label rather than in a dish — it is the soy in a blended oil that a soy allergy has to notice.

Choosing it
Almost always refined. There is no meaningful cold-pressed version to seek out.
Storing it
Cool, dark, sealed. Keeps well.
If you cannot get it
Try: sunflower oil, rice bran oil
Allergens
soy

Measures

  • 1 tsp ≈ 4.5 g
  • 1 tbsp ≈ 13.5 g
  • 1 cup ≈ 180 g

Cups here are the Indian 200 ml cup, not the 240 ml US cup — a common reason a recipe does not work. Weigh where you can; the grams are the figure we cook to.
